Mailta ja vesiltä by A. Th. Böök
The Story
Following the written trails of Finnish writer Eino Leino, A. Th. Böök sets out on a series of wandering journeys across the Finnish regions of Satakunta, Häme, and Ostrobothnia. But don't expect GPS coordinates or scheduled hotel stays. Böök travels by boat and on foot, lingering where the mood takes him. He stops at a sinking ferry pier, chats with an old innkeeper about ghost stories, naps under a birch tree, then row across a unlogged lake to visit a forgotten church. Each chapter feels more like a long, warm letter to a friend than a dry diary entry.
Why You Should Read It
Maybe you don't care which nineteenth-century poet slept in which croft, but trust me—this isn't a dusty history book. Böök has a voice that pulls you in. He jokes about the horseflies, complains about a broken rudder, and then suddenly makes you think about an ancient lullaby someone sang a hundred years ago. What hooked me was the growing sadness underneath all the lovely scenery. The Finland he describes is vanishing before his eyes. Factories rising on riverbanks, steamboats replacing sailboats. Bohm & Hausen’s old landlord leaves, moving to city work. Even the whispering of the local “hill spirit” grows dimmer with every generation moving to Helsinki.
To me, the book lives where sorrow and fondness blur together.
Final Verdict
If you love slow, scenic journeys like those of Seat of the Soul or maybe Patricia Hampl’s travel writing, you'll drink this up. Perfect for readers who get homesick for cultures they've never directly been part of, and who cherish the last whispers of rootedness in a world gone wordy at the borders. It’s also a must-read for anyone heading to Finland: read this before you step on the soil, and you’ll feel it deep under your feet. Most surprisingly, for an A-person willing to linger between paragraphs, it will deepen your breakfast books time, one page at a time.
