Purpose of the catalogue
The LQUES Public Domain Literature Library aims to make a selection of public-domain texts more discoverable by providing curated categories, brief reading notes, and contextual links. The catalogue is designed for readers who enjoy historical literature and natural history, not for academic citation or commercial reuse.
Scope and selection
The library contains 96 books, all sourced from Project Gutenberg. The selection is not comprehensive; it reflects the editor’s interest in 19th- and early 20th-century works about animals, nature, and science. No books were added or excluded based on popularity, demand, or external recommendations.
Source attribution
Every book record credits Project Gutenberg as the original digital publisher. Author names, publication details, and keywords are reproduced as supplied by that source. The catalogue does not perform independent verification of these metadata.
Bibliographic records
Each record includes the book’s title, author(s), publisher, keywords, and a unique URL. The keywords are taken directly from Project Gutenberg’s subject headings. The catalogue note is written by the editor and offers a short interpretive comment, not a full summary or review.
Category assignment
Books are grouped into four categories based on subject matter and intended audience. Category boundaries are porous: a book about birds could appear in “Animals” if its approach is general, or in “Birds” if written for children. Categories are meant to aid browsing, not to represent definitive literary or scientific classification.
Editorial reading context
Catalogue notes are written from a close reading of the book’s preface, opening chapters, and representative passages. The editor does not claim to have read every book in full.
